Could the Dublin Bus Drivers Claim the EuroMillions Jackpot Today?

Speculation is mounting that a group of Dublin Bus employees will pick up a €23.8 million cheque today after winning the EuroMillions jackpot on Friday. The Irish Mirror initially reported that the syndicate of 22 had been keen to receive the winnings on Monday only to be told the cash wouldn’t be ready until today. However, now the paper is suggesting the delay in collecting their bounty is due to a delay in contacting one member of the collective who is out of the country on holiday.

It is thought that five of the syndicate had turned up for work on Monday morning despite matching the winning numbers 2, 11, 13, 40 and 50 with Lucky Stars 1 and 10 on Friday to snap up the eight-figure fortune. Each player will receive a slice worth more than €1 million and many of them are said to be contemplating early retirement. You can see the full breakdown from the draw at the Results page.

According to the Irish Independent, one of the winning group had only recently returned to work at the Broadstone depot following two years off due to a serious illness. The paper also claims that just two of the 22 are under 50 and the group comprises 20 drivers, an inspector and another member who has already retired.

Although there is no official word on the identity of the winner, they have made contact with the Irish National Lottery and it is known that the lucky ticket for the draw was bought at O’Hanlon’s Spar in Portarlington, Co. Laois. Staff at the store spent Tuesday celebrating the good fortune of one of its customers, with owner and manager Tom O’Hanlon telling the Irish Mirror, “We are absolutely delighted for the shop, we have had great local support and it has created a great buzz for the locality.”
