Could Ireland Join Powerball One Day?
As the giant U.S. lottery Powerball prepares to make its debut in the UK, it raises the question of whether the game might one day make its way to Ireland!
UK National Lottery operator Allwyn announced earlier this year that a deal had been struck with the Multi-State Lottery Association (MUSL), which runs Powerball across 48 states and jurisdictions in the U.S. The agreement involved a UK version of Powerball launching in July, with the two countries pooling money for the jackpot but administering other prizes separately.
UK Powerball will have an extra prize category (leading to better overall odds of winning), and its own price point of £4 per line. It is the first time in Powerball history that the game has expanded outside of the USA, and it is anticipated that the move will help jackpots to grow even faster.
The Powerball jackpot is what makes it arguably the biggest and most exciting lottery in the world. It starts at $20 million (around €17 million) and grows quickly when it is not won. There is no limit to how high it can go, and it has been known to go beyond $1 billion several times in the past. The record jackpot is $2.04 billion and went to Californian player Edwin Castro back in November 2022.
To win the Powerball jackpot, you must match five numbers from 1 to 69 and one Powerball number between 1 and 26. The odds of landing the top prize are 1 in 292,201,338, but there are lots of other ways to win by matching fewer numbers.
There has been no suggestion at this stage that Powerball tickets will go on sale in other countries anytime soon, but the UK expansion is sure to be monitored closely by national lotteries around the world. The MUSL may also be keen to branch out further if it proves successful. Perhaps Ireland, with its deep links to both the U.S. and UK, might be well positioned to become a future participant! It is already part of a couple of multinational lotteries in the form of EuroMillions and EuroDreams.
In the meantime, it is still possible to enjoy Powerball online from Ireland by betting on the results of the draw. You can still win incredible jackpots, and there’s the added security and convenience of knowing that you can play from home and automatically get notified of any prize wins. You just won’t find Powerball playslips at a retailer, unless you’re planning a trip to the UK.
Dublin Millionaire
There’s a wide range of games to choose from throughout the week in Ireland, including Lotto, EuroMillions, EuroDreams and Daily Million, and so far in 2026 there have been 16 millionaires created.
The last of those came in Sunday afternoon’s Daily Million draw, when an online player from Dublin matched the numbers 1, 7, 13, 17, 19 and 28.
Lottery spokesperson Sarah Orr said: “What a way to finish the weekend by becoming a millionaire! That’s the reality of an online player in Dublin who won the top prize in the 2pm Daily Million draw on Sunday afternoon. An email was sent to the winner, who has now taken the title of 16th National Lottery Millionaire of 2026, encouraging them to log into their account. The winner should contact our Prize Claims team who will make arrangements for them to visit the Winners Room to collect their €1 Million top prize.”
All Irish lottery winners have 90 days from the relevant draw date to claim their prize. Make sure to check the latest results after every draw you enter to make sure that you don’t miss out.
